Georgia wanted to burst out, but she tried to collect herself altogether before it could happen. “Well, yeah. That really is your one million question.” Jennifer took a bite first, while Georgia was observing her. “Have you heard about mafias?” she threw another question, instead of answering directly. Furrowed brows, Georgia replied as she began to touch her food, “Mafias? Aren’t those popular in fiction?” she asked as she prepared a bite of fried rice. The spoon was already half-way through her mouth, when she halted as realization struck her.

Sophia tried not to shudder at her own indifference. Maya let go of Sophia's shoulder and whisper-yelled. “Are you out of your mind, Soph? You're getting yourself involved with people from the mafia," Sophia froze, and Maya continued. "Mafia as in, M-A-F-I-A. Those are the type of people you're getting yourself involved in," She didn't know what exactly the meaning of a mafia was, but she knew it was a dangerous organization. They sold illegal drugs and all sorts of weapons. Some were even engaged in human trafficking and rape, if not worse.

“They’re brothers. Mafia in Sicily. The head honcho, Aamon De Luca, their dad, was killed.” My mind keeps drifting back to something I caught on TV a while back in Sierra’s office. She seemed to know the brothers and had a soft spot for one of them. I squint, trying to recall her exact words. She was pretty specific, like there was more beneath the surface. I thought about digging deeper then, but it didn’t seem relevant to either of my jobs. “The organization is falling apart. Nolan and Flint are on the brink of a full-blown war.” “And?” How well does Sierra really know these guys? Sometimes, the ties between people run deeper than they look.

Hookers leaned into lamp posts, a garish layer of makeup on their faces and non-existent clothing ,while clusters of smokers huddled in shadowy corners of buildings-the glowing embers of the single spots of light. Hoodlums stalked the alleys and their loud and raucous laughter would erupt like gunfire. "Hey, sweetheart," a voice called-a slurred voice, scornful. "You lost? Need some company?"

He was charming in a lethal wayb and every word he said made it harder to maintain the armor I’d built. The dinner went for hours. His associates exchanged stories about drug shipments and bodies dumped in canals like they were trading stock tips. I sipped water and listened. Every detail was ammunition.
