I wish you peace, happiness, and a future without limits. I stared at the screen, my eyes growing warm. I didn't know what that little app had really been—maybe a version of myself from another timeline, maybe the last mercy the universe had decided to give me. I typed two words and hit send. [Thank you.] A gust of night wind swept past. The text thread flickered into a jumble of code and vanished from my phone entirely—as if it had never existed. I lifted my head, looked at Ed, looked at this beautiful, vibrant city, looked at the dazzling future stretching out before me.

Andrea stated “Let’s just see if it’s the same as what they saw. I know it sounds like subconscious creation but I read about people who can see the future through dreams, so I don’t know. Let’s wait and see then.” Their other sibling didn’t join their chit-chat, he was listening to their conversation only. Without any reaction or comment, he’s looking at Andrea like he’s examining her. “Why are you looking at me like that?”, Andrea asked. “You’re gifted”, he said plainly.

Though the tank was dry, it bristled with sharp scrap metal. Callum cowered behind Sienna, clutching a fruit knife. He was trembling, but his eyes burned with venom. "Violet! You finally came!" Seeing me, Sienna let out a crazed laugh. "You thought you could see through those pop-up messages, didn't you? You thought you'd already won? Let's see who can save you this time!" Before I died in my previous life, she told me it was a brainwave interference technology she developed. It was to be used with AR glasses. It was designed specifically to manipulate people like me who had just returned to wealthy families and were emotionally vulnerable.

I was supposed to mate with that crusty excuse of a wolf from Crestborne? The future didn't look like something worth howling for.

Arlo's face was beet red. "The Fete is Pack Talia's mating festival. It's held every year so that shifters have an opportunity to find their mate," Sage said while smirking in Arlo's direction. This information shocked me. Tor had invited me to a mating festival? A feeling of warmth enveloped me at the thought. Why didn't he tell me? "I for one am excited, the females here are beautiful," Sage said, his eyes on a group of female shifters as they walked past. He gave one of them a charming wink.

Far down the pass, an explosion ripped through the snow, and the air filled with the scent of scorched flesh. From the smoke, more figures emerged — but these weren’t Bloodforged. They were guild fighters. Harlow was at the front, sabers gleaming. “Step away from him!” Varrow’s smirk didn’t falter. “Ah. The cavalry.” In the chaos that followed, Killian caught a flash of Daryl’s hand — slipping something small and dark into Varrow’s pocket before stepping back. A seed of magic. Timed magic. Killian realised it just as Varrow’s cloak flared, blocking his sight — and when it dropped again, both Varrow and Daryl were gone.

I have to stop it. You will have your chance. Her voice is liquid in my mind, gentle and soft. I hope. But not in this moment, Sydlynn. This is but an image of what could be, a possible future. If we were to go elsewhere in this place, you would see far different outcomes than this one. And yet, the possibility of its coming to pass is enough to bring us worry. Us. I turn back to the battle, heart pounding. The maji. She doesn't answer, just watches with me for a moment. This future is terrible, she sends. One which could mean the end to magic on your plane, spreading outward to others until it consumes the Universe.

Why? That future is his why.
