She chanted a group of words that I guessed was a spell. Right before my eyes, a beautiful garden appeared on the other side of a magical portal. "Hold tight." She stepped through. As I followed, I studied the enchanted opening. With my vampire eyes, I could see thousands of layers between the library and the garden on the other side, almost like I was looking sideways at a giant honeycomb.

Far down the pass, an explosion ripped through the snow, and the air filled with the scent of scorched flesh. From the smoke, more figures emerged — but these weren’t Bloodforged. They were guild fighters. Harlow was at the front, sabers gleaming. “Step away from him!” Varrow’s smirk didn’t falter. “Ah. The cavalry.” In the chaos that followed, Killian caught a flash of Daryl’s hand — slipping something small and dark into Varrow’s pocket before stepping back. A seed of magic. Timed magic. Killian realised it just as Varrow’s cloak flared, blocking his sight — and when it dropped again, both Varrow and Daryl were gone.

Dad and Soren are so deep in conversation that neither of them looks in my direction when I enter the room and drop my backpack on one of the couches, where I slump, pulling my sweaty shirt away from my skin. “We don’t have a timeline because he doesn’t have a timeline, not yet. He’s working on it. There are several pieces in play.” Soren sucks his teeth, his forehead creased with worry. Dad tilts his head as he inspects Soren. “And this magic journal? You trust it?” I rarely notice his heavy accent unless we’re with other, more distant family. His words rumble and clip compared to Soren’s rolling drawl. “It’s all we have to go on. It’s the only way to reach them.”

But maybe that had been a mistake. Early the next morning, we all gathered at the entrance to the Heart of Magic. The Guardian had provided us with supplies and transportation - magical horses that could run faster than any normal animal. "Remember," the Guardian told us as we prepared to leave, "you are all connected now. If one of you is in trouble, the others will know. Use that bond to help each other." Gabriel had grown restless during the night, as if he knew we were going on a journey. Now he seemed excited, making happy baby sounds and reaching toward the tunnel that led to the surface.

With Ryan and Jamal with her, the kids won't be able to do anything. Jasmine smiled and Rose wondered why. She was shocked when Jasmine created a world similar to hers. Mist hung low, coiling around the earth like waiting snakes. And at the center? A circle of stone. Old. Weathered. Covered in red sigils glowing with magic.

The stone where her mother had been laid to rest in white cloth was now bare, revealing she had never been there. 'She might have hidden her with magic,' Aurum suggested. "Welcome, Aurum," a voice echoed. Serene watched as Hazel and the others disappeared through the shimmering portal. An urgent need gripped her heart to locate the five-hundred-year-old Journal. Finding the original was essential to thwarting the evil witch's plans. Her eyes unexpectedly met Anthony and Josie, who had volunteered to assist her in this quest. Together, the five of them ventured inside.
