He thinks I’m playing with fire.”

I looked down the hallway and through the other side, and there was actually no one in sight. My heart hammered as I approached the large double office doors with D. BLACKWOOD engraved on the metal plate. I forced my trembling hand to knock. No answer. Great. I knocked again. Still nothing. Screw it. I pushed the door open— —and froze in place. Damian Blackwood sat behind his massive black desk. Sharp suit. Cuffed sleeves. Jaw tight enough to crack a diamond. He didn’t look up at me. Not even a glance. I opened my mouth to speak but was cut off by his deep voice.

Marcus frowned, his eyes narrowing, “What else could she want? She used you, Kaidon. After all, she took my money and said she was going to leave you.” I shook my head slowly, a sardonic smile tugging at my lips, “You really don’t see it, do you? You, Marcus BlackWood, the man who prides himself on seeing through everyone, you don’t even realize you’ve been scammed.” His brows furrowed, “What are you talking about?”

Marcus. "You don't look too happy, Mr. Marcus. Care to share why?" All eyes turned to the man with a protruding belly and receding hairline. Mr. Marcus laughed nervously again. "No, no, Master Blackwood. I..i'm elated! Truly happy. Ha ha. I'm just shocked as to how you did this without notifying the board of directors first. It seems quite unfair, don't you think?" He pointed out, glancing around the table for supportive eyes. Finding none, he gulped, adjusted his collar again and continued. "You're truly a great strategist, Master Blackwood. "You killed her." Her eyes went wide. She didn't deny it. She just pulled me deeper, her nails carving red furrows down my back. "She deserved it. She was going to sell us both."
