The drive back to the villa is silent. I stare out the window, twisting the empty pendant chain around my fingers until the silver bites into my skin. Dr. Reeves mumbles in the backseat, delirious from fever and whatever drugs the Tribunal pumped into her system. “The code,” she slurs at one point, her head lolling against the seat. “Old code. Moretti old. Buried deep.”
I glance at Dante, but his face is blank, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. I know he heard her. We both file the words away to unpack later, when we are not one wrong turn away from another ambush.
