Seething with an evil, that makes the most horrendous of nightmares seem like childs play. I wanted to look around and see where I was. But, something inside my mind told me that even though my eyes were finally open, if I blinked, this thing in front of me would devour me alive, before I even had the chance to blink a second time. It's eyes were unwavering, never moving in slightest as we glared one another down. I wasn't sure what it was waiting for and the more time that ticked by I could feel the cold seeping back into my eyes again, wanting to pull my eyelids shut. Still, I pushed back with what strength, I could barely feel to keep them open and on the thing in front of me.

“Brothers, sisters. Today we fight not for power, not for conquest, but for survival. Behind us are our homes, our families, our future. Before us are those who would see it burn. Stand firm. Do not falter. Together, we are unbreakable.” A roar answered him, rising from thousands of throats. The sound thundered across the valley, rolling like an avalanche, shaking the mist. My chest tightened, pride swelling as I saw the courage in their eyes. The mist shifted then. Shadows moved within it first a few, then hundreds, then thousands. GIOVANNI'S POV~ My jaw clenched as I observed my warriors, their determination etched on their faces. My eyes gleamed with pride, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction as I watched them push themselves beyond their limits. "Keep going!" I shouted, my voice resonating with authority. "Remember, the enemy never sleeps. You must be prepared for anything!" One of the warriors faltered, gasping for breath, but I was there in an instant, grabbing him by the shoulders. "Never give up!" I roared, my eyes blazing with intensity. "You're stronger than you think!"

He was scared of the look in my eyes, the look that said I was not afraid of him. I whispered these words in the lit room. "The second my father is stable enough to survive the transport. We are crossing the state line." The words just hung there. "You can watch us through your hidden lenses. You can log our coordinates through your tracking loops. You can use every satellite in the Vane network to map the rest of my life." I said this to Julian. I wanted him to remember one thing every time he looked at the screen. Julians breath hitched in his throat. His fingers curled into a fist against his trousers. He stared at me with dark eyes.

Rhazion’s expression changed instantly. “No…” Far below, Elara felt the change. The forest had gone silent. Even the dragons no longer moved. The First King slowly raised its head. Its ancient eyes narrowed. Elara looked upward. Then she saw it. An eye. Enormous. Opening within the darkness. The same eye from the void. The Sleepless One. Her blood turned cold. The eye blinked once. The entire world trembled. Mountains shook. Trees bent. The sea in the distance rose violently.

"Zach Davies! Open your eyes and look at me! See me? I won't ever lock you in the classroom again." He then reached out like he was trying to grasp something, saying, "I won't go to sleep. I'll keep you company all the way." The wind carried away the last of his words, and my soul soon vanished completely in the wind, turning into nothingness. Meanwhile, the blank exam sheet with a massive red "X" taking up the entire paper was locked away in the darkness of the bottom drawer of my desk forever.

A visible tremor ran through my frame, and for a fleeting second, a raw, unguarded guilt flickered in my shadowed eyes. Ryder’s silver eyes burned with an incandescent fury. “Did you fight with her, you spineless bastard? Or did you just slink away in the dead of night like a fucking coward, leaving her to wake up alone in that bed?” The accusation hung heavy in the air, the stark truth of my cowardly departure a bitter, indigestible pill.

In the distance, golden eyes gleamed in the darkness, one pair becoming two, then four, then hundreds. The war wasn’t coming. It was already here.

I whispered softly, hugging my knees. Yet my body trembled violently. I shut my eyes, hoping for sleep, but each time my eyelids closed I saw chains, blood, and the lustful stares of the outcast wolves who had wanted to tear me apart. I let out a small cry and opened my eyes again. No, I wasn’t ready to sleep.
