At the aquamarine pool’s edge, she pried the key from the snail shell and dipped it into the water, filling it carefully.
Holding it high, she sneered at her reflection. “This is your life in my hands now, you stupid mermaid. Why wait until tomorrow? I’ll kill you, find the treasure, and go home today!” She laughed aloud, her voice echoing against the stone.
Still laughing, she turned—then shrieked. Mermaid was standing before her, whole and radiant, watching silently.
Rhea stumbled back, the shell and key clattering to the stones. She slipped, flailed, and tumbled headlong into the pool with a splash.
