A warm and fuzzy feeling spread through her as Adnan ran his thumb over her knuckles, sighing contentedly. "Tell me about Cyprus," she said, looking up at him. Adnan's gaze shifted to her slowly, his mouth set in a thin line. "Why?" His voice sounded distant. Almost hesitant. "You never talk about your past," she said. "You only seem to care about the present." "That's because the past is behind me," he said. "I choose to dwell in the present because that's exactly what it is. A gift. There's nothing in the past but regrets and bad memories."

The words slice through the room. Marcus stiffens. “That doesn’t change the past.” “No,” Adrian agrees evenly. “But it defines the present.” My pulse pounds. “Stop,” I whisper. “Both of you.” They go quiet immediately. I look between them. One man I remember loving. One man who claims I loved him more. And I don’t know which version of myself is real. Marcus squeezes my hand. “We had a life planned,” he says softly. Adrian’s voice cuts through the air.

Adrian leaned beside me. “Did he?” “I think he knew I was different,” I replied. “But difference is not the same as departure.” He was silent. “Do you regret him?” Adrian asked carefully. I shook my head. “No. He represents who I was. Not who I am.” “And who are you now?” I turned to face him fully. “I am not escaping anymore,” I said. “I am expanding intentionally.” His hand moved to my waist again. Familiar. Steady. “You are under a global spotlight now,” he said softly. “Your past, your present, your relationships. Everything.”

I thought of the push to succeed, the many sleepless nights spent planning and plotting even as a young girl. I'd set my course a long time ago and everything I'd done since then until a few short days ago when my eyes met his across a table, had been for one purpose and one purpose only. Now I am being torn in two. My past and my future seem to be colliding and I'm helpless to stop it.

I had to move on. At least, I had to try. And, though understanding and enacting were two different things, it was easier to try if I kept myself focused on the present – rather than my jarring, pain-distorted past, or the murky and indistinct waters of my future.

Adrian stared at me before he said, “Are you sure?” “Stop being so delusional, Adrian,” I blurted out. “You are being delusional, not me,” Adrian said. “My path is clear. I don’t dwell in the past,” I snapped back. “But the past is what shapes the present and the future,” he argued.

I really do. The pen hovered above the page for a few seconds. Yesterday I saw the ring on his finger. I saw another woman kiss him like she had every right to, and the worst part is... she does. She's the one standing beside him now.
