Lucas stood outside Hazel’s bedroom, face pale and fists clenched.
“She’s in there,” Lucas said hoarsely. “It’s bad, Asher. Really bad.”
I pushed past him into the room.
Hazel lay on the bed, pale as death, surrounded by blood-stained towels. Her face was twisted in pain, tears streaming down her cheeks. Mom held her hand, sobbing quietly. The medic was working frantically, starting an IV and monitoring the baby.
“Asher…” Hazel gasped when she saw me. Her voice was weak, broken. “The baby… I think we’re losing the baby…”
