“Sit down first and take a breath. I think your head is going to explode if you don’t stop for a moment.” Mike quickly takes a seat right in front of my desk. However, he doesn’t calm down. Instead, he slides to the edge of the seat and chimes, “Caleb has been following me. He has interrupted me twice this week while I have been on runs. I think he knows something.” Well, if Caleb is following Mike, he is following Mike right now. Dang it. Mike came running straight to me. If that isn’t a big sign, I don’t know what is.

The man slowly spoke, “Even if you don’t wish to talk to me, do you plan to keep quiet forever? Do you think you’re protesting us if you stop talking?” He still did not get any response. Austin seemed to have decided not to say a single word to the man. Mike pushed his glasses up his nose, his eyes glowing with some unfathomable emotion. He said slowly, “Looks like you plan to wait for your death or turn into a puppet completely.” Austin was stunned and blinked. Mike chuckled, leaned over, and said in a low, casual voice, “Don’t you want to escape?”

“You’re drinking.” “Yeah.” “In the middle of this?” A sharp exhale came through the speaker. “What do you want from me, Mike?” I asked. “I want you clear-headed.” “Well, I’m not,” I snapped. “So congratulations.” Mike paced a few steps along the curb, keeping his voice controlled. “How much?” “Enough.” “That’s not an answer.” “It’s not your business.” “It became my business the second you started talking about confronting people.” I didn’t respond.

“I’m gonna go back out there in case he needs somethin’. Y’all better stay put for now.” Mike made his way to the coffee pot. “I don’t know which is creepier. The painted up old coot who looks like he’s about to expire any second out there chantin’ or the folks showin’ up outa nowhere and then disappearin’ just as fast.” He poured some coffee in a mug and peered into the kitchen. “Are there any biscuits left?” Melody’s eyes opened wide. “That’s why my head aches. I’m hungry.”

“Lola.” Mike’s voice came from behind me, and I turned to see him standing in the doorway. “Can we talk?” he asked. I nodded, following him back inside. --- In his office, the atmosphere was tense but intimate. Mike closed the door and leaned against the desk, his expression unreadable. “I know this is a lot to ask of you,” he said, his voice softer than before. “But I wouldn’t put you in this position if I didn’t believe you could handle it.”

His wolf growled in his head not liking that they were shooting another arrow in the dark. Mike's eyes darted to him and then to Diskant before his lips curled up. “ I was really hoping that I wasn’t dragged here like a criminal but I think I was wrong.” Then he turned to look at him and his eyes hardened. “ Well, care to tell me why I was hauled here without any rhyme or reason?” He didn’t make any threatening move and continued to sit down. His tone was full of an edge that shouted, ‘ betrayal’ that unnerved Cain. The last thing I hear before everything goes black is Mike’s voice, weak and furious. “We’re too late.”

It was Mike! "Mike!" I cried out, praying that he would hear my voice. "It's going to be okay. Listen to my voice. You are going to be back with me soon." Mike talked in a calm and soothing voice. "Just follow my voice and everything will be alright." He said, his voice becoming distant. "Mike!" I cried again. "Don't leave me!" I begged in hope he would come back.

Donalds POV When I walk into mikes house. The house is quiet. He’s sitting on the arm of the chair. The air feels heavy and it smells of whiskey and something burnt.‘aunt he tried to cook again.
