Ace’s eyes narrowed again. “So, what—you just trust this guy?”
“Did I have another option when I was being carried out of a burning building?” I shot back, exasperated.
Ace opened his mouth, probably to argue, but Spitfire chose that exact moment to stretch, arch her back, and flick her tail toward him like a tiny warning flag.
His eyes softened marginally as he crouched beside the nesting box. “Hola, princesa,” he cooed in the voice we all reserved for animals and abuelas. “You doing okay, hermosa?”
