Lydia’s POV This day could easily go down as the second-best day of my life. If anyone had told me I’d feel this happy being bonded to Leonidas, I would’ve laughed in their face, or maybe slapped them just to make a point. But here I was, smiling and giggling like a fool as Leonidas and I walked side by side down an unfamiliar path to me, yet one he knew like the back of his hand. He was telling me stories, childhood tales from a time before war and politics. He shared how he discovered his wolf, how it felt, and how proud his mother had been.

He wanted to study insects back then, and jump like the grasshoppers did all day. The rocks of the gorge itself shifted colours the higher you looked up, a light brown at the very top, and becoming darker and darker the closer to the ground you fell. The soil at the bottom was crimson all around the edges. His mother never told him how the rocks ended up in all those different colours, just patched up another piece of clothing on the piles delivered to her door, and the wounds of those who came with them, and his father just patted his head and traded him the larger, adult daily ration of bread.

Mom tried to tell me but Justin had to take over. “Ginger is about feeling and for you and me it will also be about the smell. Like when I smell your Mom she smells like my favorite ice cream and fruits. Tell me what you smell when it comes to your mom?” Justin is trying to explain the mate thing to me but wants me to smell my Mom. So I take a big whiff of Mom and to me she smells like the woods and herbs. “Well to me Mom smells like the woods and herbs. What does that mean?’’ I asked

A helicopter chase through the city. Chloe told a story about a parrot who learned to curse. The bird had belonged to a sailor. It knew words that made nuns blush. Lily told a story about a unicorn who saved the world from a broccoli monster. The broccoli monster was defeated by pizza. Lily loved pizza. "Mommy, your turn." I looked at Julian. "Once upon a time," I said, "there was a woman who thought she had lost everything." "She found it again," Lily said.
