Catherine, whose emerald eyes had already narrowed with dark suspicion, gradually softened as Vera groveled at her feet. "Really?" I laughed out loud at Vera's absolute shamelessness. I looked at her with a cold. "Everyone in the pack knows, Vera. Do you dare to swear it to the Moon Goddess?" At the mention of the Moon Goddess, Vera’s face drained of color. No werewolf dared lie to the goddess. She opened her mouth to refute me again, but Catherine held up a hand to stop her, annoyed. Vera snapped her jaw shut and lowered her head dejectedly.

She looked up at the last attacker and smiled. On any normal day, Vera should not have looked dangerous at all. She was barely five feet tall, dressed in a white dress that had no business being on a garbage planet, with skinny arms, thin legs, and a belly heavy with three babies. But now the white dress was soaked and splattered with blood, her hair stuck to her face, her machete hung loose in one hand, and the ground around her was covered with bodies that had been alive less than a minute ago.

Stone and timber collapsed inwards, sending embers raining down like blood-red snow. And then—a blinding burst of white light. It seared the air, forcing even the fiercest of them to shield their eyes. When the glow dimmed, a single figure stood in the ruins. Vera. She rose from the wreckage like a phoenix from its pyre, her skin glowing faintly as though molten lava coursed beneath it. Her hair billowed wildly in the heat, her eyes twin orbs of molten amber. Flames coiled and danced around her body—not harming her, but feeding her.

His head whipped toward her, stunned by the crack in her composure. “Vera...” “She’s not going to stop,” Vera said bitterly. “She’s not afraid to play dirty. And you? You’re still trying to manage her. Like she’s just another PR crisis. She’s not. She’s a wrecking ball, and if you keep pretending she can be reasoned with, she’s going to take down everything we’ve rebuilt.”

Vee’s POV What the fuck has Vera gotten me into? It was as though so many bad things were happening to me all at once and there was nothing I could do to save myself. First Valkor threatens to turn I and Vera into prostitutes, then I get thrown into a windowless van by a different group of men, I got shot at, got saved by a giant monster with glowering red eyes, then got carried by a beautiful man with the coldest pair of green eyes I ever saw and when I finally got a big break to get back home and save my sister before Valkor lays his filthy hands on her, I get kidnapped by three, hefty strangers.

His smile brightened. “How are you?” She smiled and her eyes sparkeled for a moment even more than was normal. “I’m good, thanks, but I expect you’re a little down since a girl beat your record by 3 periods.” She said, leaning forward.

I wouldn’t know why but I would follow their orders. “Who are you? Please state your name.” My eyes widened a fraction when I heard the animal talk. It was speaking using a female voice—meaning this animal was a she-wolf. But my parents told me that animals couldn't talk, what kind of creature was she? She was so alluring to be a monster! “I-I’m Vera Moore,” I stuttered because of bewilderment. "Why are you here in the woods? Alone? Go back home and don't ever come back here in the woods, kid."
