Ash shifts again, his paws moving away from their original places, but still keeping me pinned down. Snow continues to fall at a steady pace, the wind growing slightly and the sky becoming darker. A few minutes after the house lights up Mikki trots out of the forest with Tori, Ally, Vic and Carson with her. They pause at seeing us, but then trot over to the door where they shift and go inside, all murmuring.

"Don't remind me, yesterday was the first time I saw you in control. Your wolf didn't want to kill him" "Ivan is my childhood friend, I won't kill him. I was just mad" Skylar mumbled. I sought the sanctuary of the royal gardens, the moonlight turning the white roses into ghosts. I thought I was alone until I heard the soft crunch of grass. "Your Majesty," his voice came—a low, gravelly murmur that seemed to vibrate in the very marrow of my bones. "The moon tonight is particularly beautiful." I didn't turn. I kept my eyes fixed on the silver orb in the sky, the ivory of my mask reflecting its cold light. "Beauty is often a trap, Rodwar."

We turn at the same time to see Luka stepping out from the forest, his gold-tinted curls blowing about his face, his brown eyes wide with wonder at the sight of the river. He walks past, still not seeing us. Darius and I look at each other, then scramble up to follow him. Luka stops at the top of the river embankment. He passes his hand over his eyes. When he drops his hand again, he opens his eyes and they are a milky grey colour. The glow disappears from the sky and in the darkness a full moon rises. Not just any moon. I recognize this moon. So pale, so clear, it appears as if behind a layer of ice. The first full moon of the new year. The Wolf Moon.

The glow brightened. Then suddenly— Another faint light appeared beside it. A softer glow. Pale blue. Luna’s eyes snapped open. “What was that?” Mira smiled. “The Moon of Tides.” Luna stared at the glowing energy in her hand. “I can use other moons too?” “Not all of them,” Mira explained. “But some may answer your call.” Kael and Aeron watched from the hill below. Aeron whispered. “That’s new.” Kael nodded slowly. “And powerful.”

The sound of church bells rang in the distance, signifying the moon had reached the highest point in the sky. Occasionally, thunder rumbled in the distance, foretelling the coming storm, but that didn't bother Mason. He had to be here and see this through at her request. Mason stood with his brother, Micah, while the Elder Werewolves members stood in the Nexus' center a few feet away. The Nexus was a sacred ground for the Moon Goddess's worshippers. The gravel aisle led up to a raised circular concrete stage, and in the middle of the circle, chained to a metal spike, was Melania.

Mask Princess retorted. "If that's the case, why did you save him from my arrows that night?" Her mother asked. Mask Princess stood frozen, her eyes holding a distant look as she absorbed the weight of her mother’s question. The absence of her response only served to build more tension into the already taut atmosphere. Finally, she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper, "I want to know how you managed to hide for years." Her Mother bristled with surprise and impatience at the evasion, but soon relented as Mask Princess revealed her alliance with Minister Luna. The response unsettled her, though. "What? Why did he help you? You know he's not on our side."

He raised his head at Matt at the alarming question raised. "That should be this full moon." Alpha Andrea finally answered even with Fiona's intent to intrude, I smirked behind my puffy face from the food I was trying hard to masticate. "Oh I see, that is perfect timing, the season of the Moon Goddess, blessing the Aloha and his Luna, we could have what such auspicious date, but we're so engrossed in each other that as a common Gemma and Omega we choose a normal day." Matt let out his hand scrolling through his phone and Alpha Andrea's eyes were red, and the redness I could see calming to purple anytime soon.

She wiped them away after a while and sat up slowly. Then she led down, her hand slid beneath the bed. Her fingers closed around something cold. Metal. She pulled it out slowly. A silver mask gleamed in the faint firelight. Moonfall. A gathering where wolves wore masks and identities vanished. A place where strangers met in the dark. A place where dangerous things happen. Celeste ran her thumb over the edge of the mask. A slow smile spread across her face. “One night of being no one”. She lifted the mask and held it against her face.

MARA I knelt beside a pool fed by a narrow stream. Moonlight rippled across its surface, silver on black.
