The Moon was fully above the horizon now, enormous and red, filling the eastern sky with a light that was not quite light as Lena had understood it — it had depth to it, texture, as though it were a medium rather than a source, and when it fell on her skin she felt it in layers: on the surface, and underneath the surface, and underneath that, in the deepest place, in the blood.
