I walked over to the balcony, enjoying the wind before softly replying, "I've called you like this several times before, Yohan." It was also my first time being a mother. I felt anxious and did not know what to do every time Julian got sick. Even with the family doctor present, I still called Yohan with trembling hands. My voice broke whenever I begged for him to come home. However, I could still recall his icy reply back then. Mom staggered into the kitchen, completely drunk. I quickly shoved my books under the blanket, startled. She walked over to my bed and stood in front of me. I froze, watching her as she smiled at me gently. It was the same smile she only ever gave to Annie. She sat down next to me and suddenly said, "I love you so much. Do you hate me?" I was caught off guard for a moment, and then, a strange feeling of joy rushed through me. Mom had actually said she loved me.

"Sorry, Mom... but Joy is nice and... and she took me to see the beautiful places in the village." His mother pulled Damian away, giving Joy a sharp look. "Joy, please stay away from my son. He can't play with you." Joy was silent, but then she smiled sadly. "I understand, Auntie. I just want Damian to be happy. But if Damian can't play with me, I won't force him to." His mom didn't say anything else, just pulled Damian home. Along the way, Damian felt his heart heavy. He didn't understand why his mother was so hard on Joy. Joy was a good friend, and Damian felt more alive when he was with her.

I confirmed, tears of happiness streaming down my face. My mom let out a joyful cry and lurched forward, wrapping me in a big hug. Her arms were tight around me, and I could feel her body trembling with emotion. Lola jumped up and down, her joy so palpable that it was infectious. "I can’t believe it! I’m gonna be an aunt!" I could not believe that this was something my mom might experience occasionally and she could still muster up the happiness and joy of going for another shopping trip. It was an eye opener for me. She was starting to look more like a superwoman to me. My exhaustion seemed to drain my excitement away. I was starting to look through the outfits on the rack with numb eyes now. I turned to my mother, "How did you always get so excited because of shopping?" My mother smiled. "Well, you would soon understand." She cupped her cheeks, "The joy of looking your best isn't something that can be quenched by a little thing called exhaustion."

She cried out joyfully "I really did it mom, I'm free" Her mother pulled her back, as the tears flowed free from both of them, each crying for their own different reason "I'm so proud of you honey" Came the broken voice of her mother "you've endured so much and yet, you've pulled through, your father would have been so proud of you"
