Mia watched him pathetically splash water on his face like he was trying to erase his existence from the planet.
He rinsed his mouth, spat dramatically, then went back in again, scrubbing his cheeks and jaw like he was fighting an invisible enemy.
Mia blinked, then hurried off.
She returned a minute later with a clean towel draped over her arm and a small bottle of mouth-freshener water in her hand.
“Um,” she said politely, stepping closer, “you can clean your mouth with this. It’ll taste better than… mud I guess”
James didn’t respond.
His entire face was buried under the stream now, water splashing everywhere. He hummed something unintelligible, clearly committed to drowning the trauma.
