I'd wanted to know what a normal life felt like, so I'd kept that part of myself buried. When I met Samantha, struggling to get by but pushing through school anyway, I made her my best friend. When she couldn't afford the hot meals in the cafeteria, I'd pile extra food onto my tray every day and pretend I couldn't finish it, sliding it over to her. When she couldn't pay for school materials, I'd made up a story about winning a scratch-off and covered it for her. When guys from outside school started giving her trouble, I'd scared them off myself.

She closes the door behind her. I sigh and lie back down, staring at the ceiling. Nora coming too… I don’t know how I feel about that. On one hand, it’ll be fun having her there. On the other… having my best friend around while I’m secretly losing my mind over her brother feels like I’m backstabbing her. I close my eyes, trying to force sleep. But all I can think about is Killian’s mouth on mine and definitely, the next time I see him.

“It’s… nothing serious. Just a sweet gesture from someone I like.” “Nothing serious? From someone you like?” Mirabel clutched her chest in mock betrayal, eyes sparkling with delight. “My best friend gets a mysterious rose delivered to our dorm and tries to play it cool? The only friend I had other than Noah. Andrew was like my confidante, listening to me when my best friend and mate indulged in fun. He relished the feeling of seeing me angry. But, I had something important to do.

He looked up when I walked in, and his face lit up. “You came.” “You asked.” He smiled. “That’s what you used to say to him, isn’t it?” I froze. “How did you—?” “I read your book, Ava. The first one. The one about the girl who loses everything.” He set down his book. “I figured it out. The ex‑boyfriend. The best friend. The betrayal.” I sat down across from him, my heart pounding. “And you still wanted to have coffee with me?”

I'm no better than Will doing this to her, and yet, I can't help it. “And you’re not just being nice right now, Jaden.” My lips graze her ear. “Because if you were really mad at me, you wouldn’t have come in here with those tight pants on. You would have stayed in your room for the rest of the night where you should be. Let’s not start something we can’t finish. It would be a shame to lose my best friend because I want his little sister underneath me, and we both know, that can't happen,” I whisper.

My Brother's best friend was dragging me like he owned me. At the top of the stairs, he shoved open a door to a private VIP booth. The room was dark, soundproofed, with deep couches and low lights. He threw me inside, slamming the door shut behind us. The bass from the club was muffled now, but my pulse was louder. I spun around to face him, breathing hard. My hair was messy from the dance floor, eyes wide but defiant. “What the hell was that?”

She loved how I made her feel. She could play all she wanted. She knew she was addicted and to be honest, so was I. “Hmmm,” I leaned forward and spread her legs as she looked at me wantonly. “You know you love me.” “Of course Matthew, you’re my son’s best friend.” She joked. “Oh that’s how it is, huh?” I smirked. My hands slid across her thigh down to her patch. “Now I’m Matthew?”

His tone makes my skin itch, a low burn crawling up my spine. He says it like he's going to kill his own brother. “Nothing,” I reply lightly, though my pulse spikes with every breath. I glance at the spines of the books, pretending the rows of leather-bound volumes are more interesting than the man next to me. “I’m the best friend of his ex… the ex he keeps calling.” My fingers curl around a book. “I used to like him, you know” I admit, daring to look at Mr. Madden. “As a friend.”

I couldn't bring myself to stomach the term 'best friends', but that's what we'd been. He always acts like we were strangers now, maybe mere acquaintances, like the years we'd been best friends didn't happen and had not meant something to him. I bent and picked up my fallen books. Beside my textbook lay a matte black book that wasn't mine. It had tiny silver lines running across its surface. It looked expensive, like all his things now do. It must have fallen off his hand when I bumped into him. And he'd been in too much of a hurry to get away from me to have noticed.
