Novel & Cerita My Book Is My Best Friend

I'd wanted to know what a normal life felt like, so I'd kept that part of myself buried. When I met Samantha, struggling to get by but pushing through school anyway, I made her my best friend. When she couldn't afford the hot meals in the cafeteria, I'd pile extra food onto my tray every day and pretend I couldn't finish it, sliding it over to her. When she couldn't pay for school materials, I'd made up a story about winning a scratch-off and covered it for her. When guys from outside school started giving her trouble, I'd scared them off myself.

I tell her as little as possible about why I’m back, only that the situation required hands that the board would trust. It’s easy in the way things are easy when both people have already finished the harder version of the story. At the end of it she adjusts the strap of her bag and looks at me directly. “So we’re friends?” I consider the word. Friends feels accurate enough for what remains. Anything more would be dishonest. Anything less would be unnecessarily cold. “Friends,” I say. She nods once, satisfied, and heads in the opposite direction down the hall.

“He didn’t have to do that.” “He wanted to. He’s like that. When I said I was bringing my best friend, he immediately went into host mode. ‘Make sure she knows where the library is. She’ll disappear for days.’” Mirabel grinned. “He’s not wrong though. Our library is insane—floor-to-ceiling shelves, those rolling ladders, big leather chairs. You’ll never want to leave.” The mention of the library made my chest warm despite the nerves. Books had always been my safest place. “Sounds dangerous.”

The only friend I had other than Noah. Andrew was like my confidante, listening to me when my best friend and mate indulged in fun. Andrew knew of my feelings for Noah and he would always remind me how difficult it was for humans to be with the likes of us. The one reason I have been holding back. “Hey man, I think you should come have some fun. Cute girls and …guys” I exhaled after reading the message. Andrew never ceased to intentionally annoy me. He relished the feeling of seeing me angry. But, I had something important to do.

He looked up when I walked in, and his face lit up. “You came.” “You asked.” He smiled. “That’s what you used to say to him, isn’t it?” I froze. “How did you—?” “I read your book, Ava. The first one. The one about the girl who loses everything.” He set down his book. “I figured it out. The ex‑boyfriend. The best friend. The betrayal.” I sat down across from him, my heart pounding. “And you still wanted to have coffee with me?”

My Brother's best friend was dragging me like he owned me. At the top of the stairs, he shoved open a door to a private VIP booth. The room was dark, soundproofed, with deep couches and low lights. He threw me inside, slamming the door shut behind us. The bass from the club was muffled now, but my pulse was louder. I spun around to face him, breathing hard. My hair was messy from the dance floor, eyes wide but defiant. “What the hell was that?”

I’m not sure if it will work, but it’s all I got. I don’t think I would be able to give Tony up, if I allowed him in. I don’t want to hurt him, Sharon or get hurt myself, but I’m at a crossroads and I don’t know which way to turn. Sharon is my best friend who suggested I go down this path but we didn’t expect it would lead me to her own son.

His tone makes my skin itch, a low burn crawling up my spine. He says it like he's going to kill his own brother. “Nothing,” I reply lightly, though my pulse spikes with every breath. I glance at the spines of the books, pretending the rows of leather-bound volumes are more interesting than the man next to me. “I’m the best friend of his ex… the ex he keeps calling.” My fingers curl around a book. “I used to like him, you know” I admit, daring to look at Mr. Madden. “As a friend.”

I couldn't bring myself to stomach the term 'best friends', but that's what we'd been. He always acts like we were strangers now, maybe mere acquaintances, like the years we'd been best friends didn't happen and had not meant something to him. I bent and picked up my fallen books. Beside my textbook lay a matte black book that wasn't mine. It had tiny silver lines running across its surface. It looked expensive, like all his things now do. It must have fallen off his hand when I bumped into him. And he'd been in too much of a hurry to get away from me to have noticed.
