Nancy was in her element.
She moved through the space like a dancer on stage—graceful, radiant, magnetic. “Emily,” she called, holding up a flowing ivory dress with delicate beadwork. “Try this one. It’s soft, romantic. Perfect for the engagement dinner.”
Emily took the dress with a polite nod, her fingers brushing the fabric. It was beautiful. Too beautiful. She didn’t belong in it.
Nancy turned to Charles, who had taken a seat on one of the velvet benches, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. “You’ll tell us the truth, won’t you, love? You are going to be the judge.”
