Went to find the engineers. Found eight in the first hour. Twelve by noon. Not all of them were useful. Two had been theoretical engineers, consciousness-based, working on problems that had no physical application. But six were real. Had built things with their hands before consciousness and still had the knowledge in their bodies even if the bodies were old. She put them with Pia. Pia, nine years old, took one look at them and started asking questions about load-bearing calculations that made three of the six visibly respect her and the other three visibly struggle with their own reactions.

I'm here because I can design an engine that will give a thirty percent more horsepower without sacrificing fuel efficiency. I'm here because I can rebuild a transmission blindfolded and identify a misfire just by listening." I smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "So apart from fucking Lucian…which, by the way, is none of your goddamn business…I'm a damn good car engineer. Better than either of you, I'd bet." Melody cheered inside my head. A small figure ran past June. It was June 04. The little girl jumped onto the shadow-mans back. Her small hands glowed with a purple light. She dug her fingers into the white bone armor. "Run, Engineer!" the girl screamed. The shadow-man made a noise. It sounded like metal grinding It tried to grab her. The girl was too fast. She was a problem in its system. Benson did not waste time. He jumped through the window of the Engineering building. June felt proud. It did not last long.

We navigated through a labyrinth of service corridors, a world away from the glittering facade, until we reached a private, soundproofed meeting room – a VIP lounge, converted for our purposes. The Engineer was already there, a gaunt man in an impeccably tailored suit, his eyes sharp and cautious, darting around the room as if expecting ghosts. He wasn’t a typical ‘client.’ His kind dealt in pure intellect, in equations and chemical reactions, not in blood and territory. He had a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. I had mine on the polished mahogany table between us. “Engineer,” I greeted, extending a hand. He met my grip, his fingers surprisingly delicate.
