But when I'm with you, you don't give a damn about me. Don't you think you're going too far, my Prince? I'm sorry; please forgive me; it won't happen again. I made a mistake, and it's human to make mistakes. Consider what we've been through and please forgive me. I was perplexed last night because I had misplaced my car keys at my mother's house and had forgotten about your food. Put an end to it!

Then he was gone, leaving me alone in the coffee shop with the devastating realization that I'd just made another catastrophic mistake. And this time, there might not be any coming back from it.

I lost the love of my life, and I had no one else to blame but myself. A single mistake was all it took for me to lose the love of my life. One mistake and our relationship went up in smoke. I was so close to getting her back, but there's nothing that could be done to fix this now. It was far too late for apologies. I singlehandedly ruined my one chance at happiness. And for what? A position and a building contract that I never even cared for anymore. What have I done?

One stupid mistake. My fingers hovered over the screen, trembling. My vision blurred as I read the message again, slowly, letting the words sink in. A breathless, bitter laugh escaped me. "Right. A little mistake," I muttered. I didn't even care about the part where he said he loved her more. What burned was him calling it one stupid mistake. "Sleeping with my best friend," I whispered, a shaky, humorless laugh catching in my throat. "Just a little mistake." My thumb hovered over the screen, the taste of bitterness sharp on my tongue.

The man from the previous night had done me dirty. This was going to be the last time I trusted Massimo enough to follow him anywhere. I had made a mistake earlier and I would never repeat it.

I started walking toward the door, not wanting to stay in that space any longer than necessary. “Everybody makes mistakes,” he called out from behind me. “And I made a silly mistake when I was just a silly teenage boy!” I stopped. Just for a second. My hand rested on the door, my fingers tightening slightly around the handle. “Well… that mistake caused a lot of damage.” My voice was quiet, but clear. There was a pause behind me….a long one, but I didn’t turn back to look at him. “Now let’s go get married,” I muttered finally, as I threw the door open.

I look back at the screen one final time, then push it slightly away. “They made one mistake…” I say quietly. “They let me see enough.”
