I pulled out a memory of abject, total failure. The time on the Ouroboros when I’d tried to jury-rig a communication array from scrap and had instead caused a cascade failure that blacked out our entire sector for a day. The crushing shame. Jeff’s quiet, patient sigh as he’d started fixing my mess, not with a word of blame. It was a story with no heroics. No lesson learned, except perhaps ‘Demi shouldn’t touch delicate wiring.’ It was just… a mistake. A human, humiliating, deeply real mistake.

The worst thing you can do as a Danjuma is getting the wrong kind of popularity. A month later I was at the airport, saying bye-bye to my country, to my home, to my friends, to my girlfriend Aisha, and most importantly my loving grandmother. She died a year later, and I blamed my Dad for not being around when she passed, just as I blamed him for most of my mistakes. It is only later in my life that I realized that only a loser blames his or her mistakes on the actions of others. People should own up to their mistakes, correct them and move on.
