I pulled out a memory of abject, total failure. The time on the Ouroboros when I’d tried to jury-rig a communication array from scrap and had instead caused a cascade failure that blacked out our entire sector for a day. The crushing shame. Jeff’s quiet, patient sigh as he’d started fixing my mess, not with a word of blame. It was a story with no heroics. No lesson learned, except perhaps ‘Demi shouldn’t touch delicate wiring.’ It was just… a mistake. A human, humiliating, deeply real mistake.

“How dare you disrespect me like that? The greatest mistake I ever made in my life was making love to that treacherous mother of yours, ever getting her pregnant with an idiot like you. And I won't be missing words if I describe you as my greatest mistake. Anna was a mistake and you are invariably one as well. You were never supposed to have been born!” Richard scowled and then paused, seeing the pale looks on Adrian. “Enough Richard!” Grandfather Lester bellowed, his complexion turned pale and ashen. This has gone beyond mere arguments. These are words that would go many years in Adrian's heart. No amount of apology can wipe the memories of it off him!

I made a mistake, and it's human to make mistakes. Consider what we've been through and please forgive me. I was perplexed last night because I had misplaced my car keys at my mother's house and had forgotten about your food. Put an end to it!

Then he was gone, leaving me alone in the coffee shop with the devastating realization that I'd just made another catastrophic mistake. And this time, there might not be any coming back from it.

One stupid mistake. My fingers hovered over the screen, trembling. My vision blurred as I read the message again, slowly, letting the words sink in. A breathless, bitter laugh escaped me. "Right. A little mistake," I muttered. I didn't even care about the part where he said he loved her more. What burned was him calling it one stupid mistake. "Sleeping with my best friend," I whispered, a shaky, humorless laugh catching in my throat. "Just a little mistake." My thumb hovered over the screen, the taste of bitterness sharp on my tongue.

They made a huge mistake just because of someone’s bribe. “Don’t bother anymore. They had already learned from their mistakes.” Jade was ahead of Tristan. Tristan didn’t seem to hear anything and nodded at the other staff. They acted quickly and took the two. Trisha pulled her friend away before she could see the two taken away. She couldn’t handle her cousin’s anger now. She couldn’t stop smiling when she looked at Jade. “Why?” asked Jade in surprise. “I don’t think you can go back to Hawaii.”

I started walking toward the door, not wanting to stay in that space any longer than necessary. “Everybody makes mistakes,” he called out from behind me. “And I made a silly mistake when I was just a silly teenage boy!” I stopped. Just for a second. My hand rested on the door, my fingers tightening slightly around the handle. “Well… that mistake caused a lot of damage.” My voice was quiet, but clear. There was a pause behind me….a long one, but I didn’t turn back to look at him. “Now let’s go get married,” I muttered finally, as I threw the door open.

I look back at the screen one final time, then push it slightly away. “They made one mistake…” I say quietly. “They let me see enough.”
