I’ve never heard of it. I’m not much of a reader of books. I’m too distractible. When the money started to come in from the farmers’ market, I got into audiobooks, though. The sound doesn’t exactly drown out the pecking voice, but I can kind of focus on the narrator, and it really helps the day go by better.

I had no idea where to go so I walked into a library filled with dust and books. I greeted the Libyan with a smile and for the first time the library smiled at me, I was astonished. I always knew grumpy Liberians and I came to a conclusion . That’s how they were trained but I was wrong. I got into the library and picked up a huge book with the title giving me ideas. I open the book to a Picture if an ascent family. I looked back at the title. “The underworld..” I murmured quietly trying not to draw attention to myself.

I place the clam back on the shelf , I’ve had enough reading for one morning. I am about to leave when I hear a voice whisper my name, I looked around the library and it appears as though I’m alone in here. “Clara” I hear again. I follow the whisper and it leads me to a bookshelf way in the back of the library, how had I not seen this before? “Clara” the voice is on the shelf; I realize its one of the clams. I pull it off the shelf and stick it in my ear, instantly hearing the words in my mind.

“This is not an inviting library.” “It’s an office, not a library.” “How many books do you own?” Something about her tone suggested I was walking into a trap. “Around two thousand, I think.” The bookcases had been advertised to hold two hundred each, and I’d filled most of them. “Well, you only need a thousand books to qualify as a library, Mr. Be— Alonzo-s? Alonzo-y? B?” “Just Alonzo.” “Right. And a proper library should be begging you to get comfortable and stay for hours. This place looks like it’s designed to process you efficiently and spit you back out.”
