I kept my eyes on the jagged silhouette of the Black Peaks. They looked like teeth against the red moon. A low growl vibrated through the ground. It wasn't a wolf. It was the heavy, rhythmic thud of something much larger. "He sent the Sentinels," I whispered. My heart hammered against my ribs. "They don't shift. They're just teeth and hunger."

The first sentry launched at me, a chocolate brown wolf with eyes determined but with a snap of my head and a sharp spin on the spot I sent the wolf crashing to the ground, further diminishing the moral of his cronies. A black wolf which would be about the size of my wolf gave a loud menacing growl, I was ready for his attack but it never came, he looked to the side and it was then that I noticed her, Amber. She had a rather disappointed look on her face as she neared us and I noticed the way the sentries lowered their heads as she walked between them. She stared into the black wolf’s eyes, engaging in a brief mind- link before the wolf gave a snort and she gave him a nod.

Together, they restrain the now-limp Steve and back away, giving me room. Pain radiates from every inch of my bones. It feels like all my tendons are snapping. My body shatters and reorganizes itself. With a scream, I feel my body explode. Immediately, the voice I’ve heard in my dreams countless times whispers to me, ‘Rylee, I’m coming.’ ‘I'm Flash, your wolf. Now, leave this to me. I'll handle it.’ Flash has the most beautiful silver fur and turquoise eyes I’ve ever seen. Despite her relatively small size, she exudes natural leadership, much calmer than I ever was.
