Russell's POV Zoey quickly pried off a mini camera the size of a soybean and walked back, naturally sitting on my lap again. She opened her palm to show me, proudly introducing, "This is a new type of camera. It's tough to detect, and it's handy." Her eyes were filled with pride and joy as if she were showing me her trophy. I picked up the camera and examined it, recognizing its origin, "X Base makes this. You have good taste."

Luna lay curled on her side, a thumb tucked loosely under her chin. I smiled faintly, reaching for the lightbulb switch. Then, I froze as memory hit me like ice water. The mark. My breath caught as I stepped closer to Luna's bed. Slowly and carefully, I lifted her arm. There it was. Perfectly clear beneath the pale glow of the moonlight. It was etched into the skin as though it was always there. My first instinct was to call out. "Maya–" The name barely made it past my lips before I stopped it. My fingers tightened over Luna's wrist, then loosened almost immediately.

In the small hours of the night, when the pack had finally gone quiet and the moon had climbed high, Luna lay curled on her side in her narrow bed, the thin blanket twisted around her legs. She stared at the square of sky visible through her window. The moon looked different now. Not softer. Not closer. Colder. “Why?” she whispered, voice raw and used up. “You… you did this.
