“She gets that from her mother,” I laugh, still in awe as my hands hover above Miracle’s shell, afraid that if I touch it, it might shatter or disappear. It’s grown so much larger. It was once about the size of my two fists together. Now, it’s almost as large as a ripe melon, ready to burst. The shell has matured, taking on texture, ridged like the face of a mountain, shaped almost like scales. The surface has a dark luminescence that changes colors depending on the angle it is perceived–Sometimes blue, sometimes green, other times white or black, edged with a deep crimson red that holds it together like a net.
