Chapter 10 KIARA’S POV The shadows of the orphanage always felt colder in my dreams. I could smell the damp concrete, the metallic tang of cheap cleaning supplies, and that underlying scent of stale soup and unwashed blankets. In the dream, I was seven again, huddled in the corner of a room that held too many children and not enough hope. I was waiting for someone to look at me, to see me, but the figures passing by were just grey blurs. Then the blur sharpened into the face of my adoptive father, his blue eyes piercing and judgmental, reminding me that I was a project, a contract, a girl with a name that didn't belong to her.

"I grew up in an orphanage. When I was in high school, I had this friend, Jasper. He was charming and cute; all the girls loved him. He was a jovial and carefree guy. His dad was a billionaire. They had so much money. He took a liking to me, and we eventually became the best of friends; we were so close, almost inseparable. He'd invite me to his house, and soon, he asked his father to adopt me because he saw me as his brother. The idea appealed to his father, and he told me he wanted to adopt me. First, my parents are killed and I am raised in an orphanage in the human world, then, because even human kids hate me, I ran and ended up being adopted by dragons. The whole room was watching, soaking up every second. I smiled. "Fine. Let's do it." My easy agreement seemed to catch Ethan off guard. Derek practically dragged me into a corner, giddy. The emcee was still up front doing damage control. "Our Ethan really is extraordinary. Everyone wants a Harvard scholarship kid for a son!" When I signed the last line, I looked up at Ethan and Rachel. Derek, satisfied, made a show of generosity and invited me to say a few words. "You raised Ethan for years, so you're practically his adoptvie mother. Say a couple words before you go."

I could see how much my daughter actually meant to the whole family . “I wanted to thank you for looking after Nari , Tynan.” He just looks at me with a sad smile . “How could we not , honestly if you saw the way she was living in the orphanage it was disgusting . Within a week my Kurat had the place tore down and the remaining kids brought to our pack . There is a little girl there that Nari is particularly attached to . I think if she still hasn’t been adopted by the time the kids leave to your kingdom I would consider taking her.” He says with a slightly more cheerful expression on his face .

“Mom, can we keep her? She’s really sad. Please?” The little girl gave him a grateful look. “Thank you. You’re the first person who’s ever been nice to me,” she whispered. “If you don’t want to keep me, that’s okay. I won’t blame you. You don’t have to take care of me.” Her words tugged at Nina’s heart. Seeing how well Orion was getting along with her, and how much her son wanted to help, she found it hard to say no. "Nina, why don't we follow Orion's wish? Let's take her home for now. If we can't find her parents, we can help her find a good adoptive family," Nash finally decided, giving in to Orion's request.

I smiled, “I know the boy we are going to adopt next is Blaine. I know he is the reason you volunteer at the orphanage. I also know that there are stories she could have told me, but she and I agreed they were your stories to tell… if you ever feel comfortable telling me. I know that hiring you as my nurse and assistant means that you will be able to be his personal nurse also, if that is what you would like. I know that you put him up for adoption to keep him safe. We can keep both of you safe. If you accept the position, it will include a room in the pack house. If you have a mate, you can have the cottage next door, if you want.”

he protested. “Do it!” I shouted, spilling my alpha aura. Norton immediately silenced, inclining his neck. Then he nodded, grimly. Norton had been with me ever since we were ten years old. He was an orphan, abandoned by his pack in the wild. Lily took him in and since then we were like brothers watching each other’s backs all the time.

Gaia POV. It has been two weeks since I returned with Rosa and twenty other orphans. They have all settled beautifully and Rosa has her daddies wrapped around her little finger. Not just them, but my family, too. There is plenty of space for the kids and they all sleep in rooms shared with either their siblings or older children. Today we have organised for an adoption party to take place. All potential new parents have been vetted by not just the supernatural council but the human councils, too. So they will come today and spend time with their potential new child or children.

Fifteen Years Ago Being an orphan, you do not get to decide what happens to you. You do not get to decide where you will go or with whom. One can stay in the orphanage until one turns eighteen and then go out living on your own or, one can get adopted by a family who one did not choose.
