The Mate Games
Its fur falls away like dead leaves, revealing flesh crawling with worms and bones breaking through the skin.
I stumble back, nausea rising. The fox snarls, eyes black and empty.
I shut my eyes and force myself to keep moving.
Night falls faster than I expect.
I find a sturdy tree with low branches and climb up, gripping the rough bark. From this height, I can see shadows shifting below.
I wrap my cloak tighter around me, shivering despite the warmth.
Then, out of the darkness, a pale face appears, my younger self, small and frightened.
Her eyes are wide and full of sorrow.
