Present, but so far away, like hearing someone moving around in the next room through a thick wall, close but unreachable.
I didn't push. I lay back on the bed, stared at the ceiling, and counted the stones until I dozed off.

The first training session took place that afternoon, in a narrow courtyard tucked away beside the north wing. It was walled in on all sides, no windows peering down into it, a flat stretch of stone, maybe twenty feet across. The kind of space designed so whatever happened inside couldn’t be seen or overheard.
I knew a trainer was coming, but I hadn’t been told who.
