Nikolai had insisted on staying close; he was laying next to me, but the silence between us felt necessary tonight. Like we both needed space to carry the prophecy alone for a few hours before we faced it together again. I must have finally drifted off, because the scream yanked me awake immeduately I bolted upright. The air already stung my eyes. Flames licked up the far wall near the window impossibly fast and bright. The tapestries woven with protection sigils were curling black at the edges, the threads hissing as they burned.This wasn’t normal fire. I scrambled out of bed, bare feet.
