She fanned her burning mouth. "Slow down will you?" His face cringed. "But I'm so hungry!" She tried to speak with the noodles in her mouth. "Tch, hot! Water!" She took the glass beside her. He shook his head as he clicked his tongue finding her hopeless. "I was so shocked by the fact that I'm inside my own novel, I forgot that I haven't had anything since the day I came into this world." She wiped the bowl clean and rubbed her tummy satisfied. "I was so hungry that I didn't even have a chance to complain about this food-" She smiled nodding.

“Babe. They have potential.” “I don’t want SAS,” I say through gritted teeth. “I don’t want NYU,” he replies with as much annoyance laced in his voice. I don’t like him again. My fist meets his shoulder. “You don’t even know NYU.” NYU is almost as exciting as the city. New York is most people’s favourite city, crawling with the good, bad and ugly. People mind their business. No one cares what you do as long as you don’t get in their way. It’s a great place to start a new life. We can be young, wild and free there. “Think about me too. Let’s apply together,” I say while poking his chest hard enough to leave a dent. “I want NYU.”

I murmured, and then she disappeared. I was fortunate because of Chelsea. She owned an apartment a few blocks away from the office in New York City. She had a car, so I wouldn’t need to worry about transportation because I probably would live in the streets if it weren’t for her. I knew that living in the United States’ largest city wasn’t easy. The cost of living in Manhattan was beyond my savings reach. I had to tighten my budget until I got my first check.

Jack was polishing his sniper rifle on the kitchen table. He was wearing a "I Love NY" t-shirt that was two sizes too small. "I hate this city," Jack grumbled. "Too many people. No trees. And the rats here are bigger than the wolves in Alaska."

I tried to bite the one on my left. He backhanded me across the face without even looking. My head snapped to the side, and stars exploded behind my eyes. For a moment, everything went grey. Then the world swam back into focus, and we were at the door. The guard pushed it open. Sunlight. So much sunlight, after days in the dark cellar. It blinded me, seared my eyes, made tears stream down my cheeks. I blinked desperately, trying to see, trying to orient myself. The courtyard was packed. Hundreds of wolves, maybe more. They lined the walls, filled the balconies, crowded every inch of space. And they were all staring at me.

The jet touched down in New York just after sunset. The city sprawled beneath them like a restless beast, its towers glinting with indifferent light, streets already alive with horns and voices, a pulse that didn't soften for anyone. To Sherry, it felt less like homecoming and more like sentencing. New York didn't embrace you when you fell; it devoured you. Tonight, it greeted her like a judge in a black robe, cold, formal and unbothered by pleas for mercy.
