The Fake Empire

Teagan leans on the railing, smiling. “Then wherever she is, I hope she’s thinking about you too. And next time you’re home you bring her to meet us.”
The fireworks started then, bright bursts of gold and white across the sky, reflecting off the lake behind the house. My gaze followed the light trails as they exploded and faded, one after another, painting the sky in fragments.
I unlock my phone, typing before I could talk myself out of it.
