The majority of Valley Creek was sleeping. The network evokes softness in the minds. Patrol teams on night shift. A couple of late-night scholars working in the archive. Milrac could have left the reports till tomorrow, but he was reviewing them below. All the others were sufficiently intelligent to go to bed. Sadly, Vessa and I were trying to solve a mystery. This meant that sleep was optional. I was at one of the bigger tables, a stack of fertility studies before me. My eyes hurt. My neck hurt.

The city moves past the glass, lit orange and grey, Moscow at two in the morning doing what Moscow does, surviving itself. Petrov is dead. His two lieutenants too. It took four hours to get the information I needed and another twenty minutes to finish what the information started. I went alone because I needed to go alone, because some nights the only thing that cuts through grief is work, and the work tonight was the kind that requires no witnesses. Brain matter dried on my left shoe somewhere around midnight. I noticed it and didn't care. I smell like blood and whiskey and the particular smoke of a building I set on fire on my way out.

Night was always the time when everything happened. From dark supernatural forces roaming the world, to vampires lurking in every corner of the streets and most importantly, those who found pleasure in the nightlifes. Those whose only solace were clubs, bars, and joint houses. And let's not forget, notorious gang members were said to enjoy prying on the weak at night out in the streets. In one word, the night harbored everything bad and evil; which was the gang members, vampires and demons. Only two out of those didn't exist in this world we live in except for the gang members of course. Let's face it, this was reality anyways.

At that hour, the streets were as busy and noisy as during the day. Before long, revelers would take refuge in their favorite taverns and brothels, the lamplighter's work would end until it was time to put out the streetlights in the morning, and those who returned exhausted from work would rest in the safety of their homes. The streets would then be the exclusive territory of night guards, cheap whores, and those who shouldn't even be out there.

I have stopped briefly to eat, listen to music to take a break before starting again.
