The overhead lights were off, replaced by the multicolored glow of LED strips taped to the edges of the desks. Noelle was sitting in an ergonomic chair that looked like it had been salvaged from a spaceship. She was small — barely five-foot-two — with short black hair that stuck up in odd angles, as if she'd cut it herself with kitchen scissors. She was wearing an oversized hoodie with a cartoon cat on it, leggings, and fuzzy slippers. Her glasses, thick-rimmed and slightly too big for her face, were perched on the tip of her nose. When she saw me, she spun around in her chair, and her face broke into a grin so wide it looked almost painful.

I hold out my hand and Noelle looks at the doctor, waiting for her to nod before she carefully walks over to stand beside me. “Beta Charlie told me you were alive, but I didn’t believe it until I smelled your scent, and then I smelled the blood, and…oh, you really are fixing Laney’s leg, aren’t you?” she asks, leaning over to watch what the doctor, no Luna Yara, is doing. “My sister has been trying to teach herself medicine so she could help heal our pack members,” I say proudly. Noelle moves to stand closer to Luna Yara, not releasing my hand.
