Chapter 18 The city lay before them, infinite and unforgiving. Shadows stretched long under trembling streetlights, the air thick with the distant scent of rain and gasoline. Lena and Noah ran. Steps rang out behind them—closer than she would have liked. Damien wouldn't give up. He was a ghost from her past, resurrected just when she'd begun to believe she was finally free. Linda, sitting beside me, muttered under her breath, “Slutty bitch.” That jogged my memory. There was a drugging subplot around this part of the story. If I remembered correctly, Linda was the culprit. She had been secretly in love with Calvin for years, but Calvin only had eyes for Nancy. In the original novel, she managed to drug him, but afterward he turned the tables and dosed her ten times worse, leaving her stranded with no help. She ended up with a terrible fate.

Dad took that as defiance. He threw me into the basement, even though I was close to death. It was dark and cramped in the basement. He tossed me onto the ground like I was a bag of trash. I was claustrophobic. Frightened, I began to shake uncontrollably. "Dad… Dad, please don't lock me up in here!" However, there was no sympathy in his eyes. He looked at me with cold indifference and hatred. Shaking my hand off, he looked down at me. "I'll let you out when you stop having evil thoughts, Yvonne Linnus!"
