“I know you want to reassure her. But reaching out now could lead Father right to us.” I stare at Amber's messages, my thumb hovering over the keyboard. Finally, I turn off the phone entirely. “Okay. But once we're secure, once we have a plan, I'm telling her something. She's my best friend.” “When it's safe.” Zane agrees. “I promise.” The safe house is exactly what I expected— a small, weathered cabin in the middle of nowhere. No neighbors visible. No main roads nearby. Just isolation and woods. Perfect for hiding. Terrible for feeling trapped.

The night was eerily silent as Dino and Tomiwa sat inside the dimly lit command room of their new safe house, a location known only to them. The move had been necessary—Sanchez’s men had been circling too close, and the last thing they needed was another ambush. Tomiwa, despite his injuries, insisted on being in charge of every detail of the relocation. The safe house was a sprawling estate hidden deep in the countryside, a place that had once been a private retreat for a reclusive businessman. Now, it was reinforced with state-of-the-art security, high walls, and a perimeter surveillance system that only Tomiwa had access to.

“Several of our people made it out. They have reached the safe haven — the one we always planned for. They are waiting for us.” Maxton’s mind whirled with possibilities. The safe haven was a place of last resort, a fallback plan in case of complete disaster. That they had made it there meant the situation was dire, but it also meant there was still hope. “We need to move,” Maxton said, his voice filled with resolve. “Gather our men. We are going to meet them.”

ETHAN “I know.” I say softly. “But this is the best way to keep you safe. And we'll keep you informed about everything that's happening. You won't be out of the loop.” Hazel looks down, clearly struggling with the decision. “Where would I go?” “We have a safe house in the mountains.” Arnold explains. “It's secluded and well guarded. You'll be safe there.” Hazel nods slowly, still looking uncertain. “I trust you both. If you think this is best, I'll go.”

“Where do you live now? “Stop this. I’ll make sure Tammy relocates to another city. “The ring incident is my fault. “Come home, Millie.” His last message was a voice note. I tapped to play it. His voice was raspy. “I just got home. “Your things are gone. “Are you honestly abandoning me?” I turned off the voice message. My phone was tossed to the side. The place I rented was tiny. It was just a one-bedroom apartment. The apartment overlooked an overpass, where the sound of cars rumbled all day long.

I called after him. He stopped and turned around. “What?” “Look, I know this is your house, but I’d feel safer if you left the spare keys with me. Please.” For a moment, he simply stared at me. Then he dropped the keys into my hand and walked away, slamming the door behind him. I couldn’t tell whether he was angry or hurt. Either way, a strange ache settled in my chest. Deep down, I felt bad for him.

“I have a place. No one knows about it. We’ll stay there until I figure out what to do next.” She wanted to protest—wanted to ask why he always had a plan like he expected the world to fall apart. But instead, she nodded. “Okay.” The safehouse was a modern, minimalist apartment buried deep in an anonymous high-rise with no concierge, no cameras, and no nameplate. The elevator opened straight into the living room. It was too clean. Too quiet. Anaïs wrapped a throw blanket around herself and curled into a chair by the window. Below, the city blinked on like nothing had changed. She hated that. How the world just kept turning after something so bloody and real.

I drive, the fear and exhaustion slowly draining away, replaced by a strange sense of determination. We reach the safe house just before dawn, hidden away in the middle of nowhere. It’s a small, ramshackle cabin, surrounded by acres of empty desert. Ivan’s eyes are hard as he opens the door, his hand on his gun. “Welcome to our new home, Lilah,” he says, his voice low. “Let’s hope it’s the last one we ever need.” I nod, my heart heavy. The safe house is a grimy, rundown place, the floors bare and the walls cracked. But it’s safe, and that’s all that matters. Ivan locks the door behind us, his eyes sharp.

No one did. Not here. Not where the pact had bled. The safehouse had been a sanctuary—one of three she’d personally claimed for the rogues who couldn’t fight. The wounded. The broken. The children. Now it was just another scar in the forest. A hanging one. Her eyes found them one by one. Jenna, the young mother who’d begged for a safe place to raise her son. Theo, the mute scout who never failed to find water. Kyran, the Hollowborn seer who read omens in smoke.

She knew they were taking a risk, but they had to find a safe haven. As Emma followed Julian into the safe house, she couldn't shake off the feeling that they were taking a risk. The building looked abandoned from the outside, but the interior was surprisingly well-maintained. Julian led her to a small living room with a kitchenette in the corner. "Welcome to Safe Heaven," Julian said, gesturing to the room. "It's not luxurious, but it's home for now." Emma smiled weakly, still feeling a bit uneasy. "Thanks, Julian. I appreciate it."
