-ADRIAN POV- I've built my career on the principle that control is everything. Which is why the assignment Marcus just handed me is simultaneously the most strategic opportunity of my career and the most genuinely irritating thing that's happened to me in months.

The intercom crackles, breaking me out of my thoughts. “Commander…” The manager's voice, tired and nervous, trying desperately to sound professional. “The Omega Center has sent the first tier of selections,” she flips some pages. “These are the highest-rated Omegas from the provinces. Their scented palates are being cycled through the ventilation now.” I go still, then the vents hiss as the incoming scents flow into the room. Lilacs, honey, warmth, and sweetness. Well nothing is a complete 100% in science but that’s beside the point, the research I’ve slaved away doing all my adult life works and I should be happy, excited and celebrating but other things have been on my mind.

I hear Lesha say with a grin on her face as she watches us. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Ms.Ox, I promise not to keep her out too late." I say as I hold out my hand to shake hers. Her grandmother looks down at my hands without moving at all, and I start to feel uncomfortable and slightly awkward. She looks straight in my eyes with a serious expression on her face. "I expect her to be back here no later than 11pm and I am choosing to trust you with her safety, so if anything happens to her, you'll have me to deal with." Ms.Ox says sternly as she extends her hand and grips mine with a lot of strength that wasn't expected at all.
