She felt very small. Up ahead, she saw a house. But it did not look like a normal house. It was not made of wood. It was not made of bricks. It was made of black glass. The glass was dark and shiny. The house looked like a giant box of shadows sitting on the cliff. There were no trees around it. There were no flowers. There was only the black glass and the gray sky. People called this house "The Obsidian." It was a very expensive and a very scary place.

Luca answers, “Not much, I wanted to let you know that the gem samples you gave us produced some interesting results. Mia is thrilled.” “What kind of interesting results?” “Particularly with the obsidian stones. There is a protective energy that we can isolate. We are trying to figure out how we can pull that energy out and channel it. We think it could potentially produce a shield.” “That’s amazing.” “Yeah. That’s why I’m calling. Mia is showering right now, but she asked me to call to see if we could potentially get a larger sample of obsidian. We want to try to create a shield. Of course, we would provide you with all results and show you how to isolate it later, if you agree.”

His lips, which were normally so pink, and his eyes, which changed color to golden in the light but were originally glistening grey, were now bloodshot and swollen. His pale, clear skin had bumps and pink bruises. His lips were cut open, and blood trickled from them. He had a couple of broken ribs and fractures. He could have easily fought back, but he did not.

They stood before the Obsidian Heart, its malevolent energy pulsing ominously. The Obsidian Heart pulsed with a sinister energy, a malevolent energy that was both terrifying and alluring. It was the source of the Obsidian Circle’s power. Lyra knew that destroying it was a high-stakes gamble. The heart’s connection to the entire fortress was immense. Severing the connection could lead to a catastrophic release of dark energy, capable of decimating Silvermoon and everything beyond. But the alternative – a prolonged battle against a regrouped Obsidian Circle – was equally catastrophic. Lyra had to take the risk.

Something about the way she said it made Calix’s attention shift toward her again, though Victoria didn’t seem to notice. Or maybe she did. Because after a second, she glanced up too. The silence that settled after that felt different from the others. Closer. Neither of them looked away immediately. Then Leo loudly slammed a book shut somewhere behind them. “This one says the moonstone was forged from cursed celestial fragments,” he announced flatly. “Which sounds dramatic until you realize the author also claims he once fought a sea serpent with a spoon.” Victoria blinked once before groaning loudly and dropping her head against the table again. “I hate it here.”

The sudden pain made her vision go dark, and her hands fell slack on reflex. The obsidian urn slipped and flew from her grasp. With a crisp crack, it shattered into pieces.

So familiar, but exotic in a way I couldn't even begin to explain. I just stood, staring out the door like an absolute idiot, taking in the God at my doorstep. I couldn't take my eyes off his own. A deep-set swirling violet tinted with the darkest ebony black was confined to the irises of his eyes. It almost trapped me, like hands made from the illusory magic that seemed to pull me in.
