One Call Away Lyrics Novels & Stories

“Don’t ever try.” My phone vibrated from my bag. Maybe it was Lake calling to laugh at me. I fished it out, but it was an unknown number. I hit the red button and sipped my drink. It was turned for Cooper to sing, but he was joined by Rocket, who was singing a hit boy band song. My phone vibrated again. It pissed me off that it came from the same number. “Hello. Who’s this?” “Before you end this call, listen to me very carefully.”

His number. The man from the bar. The stranger with the calm eyes. The one I told everything to. The one who listened to me. The one who, in my blackest night, lit a candle. I stare at the card. I tremble. My thumb hesitates. Then I open my phone. I type the number. My finger hangs suspended for a second. And I press Call. One ring. Two. Three. "Yes?" His voice is steady. Clear. A winter breath.

My entire body went still. "Make the call." His voice was low. "And remember." The pressure increased slightly. "Do not reveal where you are." I swallowed. "Only tell them you're tired. That you want a fresh start somewhere else." I nodded slowly. "Don't say anything else." My fingers tightened around the phone. "Understood." Barry stepped back slightly. "Dial." I stared at the screen. My heart was pounding. I had one chance. One call. One mistake. And I didn't know who I was going to call.

The lyrics now ring out, “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream it’s over. Hey now, hey now, when the world comes in, they come, they come to build a wall between us, but you know, they won’t win.” I grab the receiver and squeal with delight. Grayson’s reaching out in the most romantic way, evoking a very erotic memory. It’s freaking perfect. As the chorus fades, Grayson's distinctive voice comes over the line in the recording, “Until Friday, Abby.”

I once heard someone say we're all just one phone call away from our damnation It's the absolute truth. My voice comes out in a shaky whisper when I ask, "Are they okay?" I wait for the nurse on the other end of the line to tell me that they will be fine. But all I get is a long stretch of silence. It feels like someone is wringing my spine. I want to double over from the pain, but the pain isn't physical,it is far from that.

Then I called my mom. Mom: "Hi, son." Me: "Hi, Mom. Good morning." Mom: "Hope you slept well." Me: "Yeah, I did." Mom: "Good. I woke up early. We’re just twenty minutes from the city. You’ll see me soon." Me: "That’s calm, then." Mom: "Have you… Ouuuu!" She screamed. Me: "Hello? Hello? What’s up?" Silence. Total silence. Then the line disconnected.

Over twenty tall men in black suits and sunglasses stepped out. One of them strode directly toward me. He removed his sunglasses, revealing a cold, striking face. His voice rang out, "Who the heck tore down Lucy's house?"

"He's all used-up, and you're still acting like he's a treasure? You must be really desperate! What's the difference between that incubus and a dog in heat? Someone like you should just find an honest guy willing to take you in!" Tracy Rowe was standing outside the county office with Jamie Stephenson, arguing with me at the top of her lungs. Meanwhile, Lionel Andrus, the man with an incubus bloodline, was waiting quietly to the side, holding our paperwork.

I've been married to Joel Hoover for three years. But whenever we go out with my best friend, Cynthia Marsh, people assume they're the couple. At the mall, sales associates hand them the gifts meant for couples. At restaurants, servers ask if they want to take part in the couples' promotion. When we travel, strangers compliment them on what a great couple they make, then hand me a phone to take their picture. At first, it makes me uncomfortable, but Joel never corrects anyone. Cynthia always laughs it off. "Maybe we just happen to look like a couple. Don't read into it." She says it so casually that every time, I tell myself not to make a big deal out of it. Then Joel tells me he's fin
