Then turning to them, he said, "Let's go, mateys. Haven't you heard them? They are out there."
"Who?" asked another boy called Tom.
"Wait," replied Okayo opening the door. "Come out, mateys. It's true. They are fighting the gatekeeper."
The boys went out of the house. It was true. A gangster was roughing up the gatekeeper and the man was groaning in paroxysms of extreme anguish. But the groans were low signaling a prolonged ferocious body torture.
"Let's go help him out, mateys please," pleaded Okayo
