The voice continued: “You chose me.” Elias suddenly grabbed his chest. Hope rushed to him. “Elias!” He looked at her. But his eyes were no longer silver. They were completely black. To be continued… part 9

“She’s waking up.” The children gathered around, confused. Silent. The white-haired girl from before stepped forward. “Is she like us now?” I nodded. “She always was. She just didn’t know how to be.” Then in the Council’s highest chamber, the Elder turned away from the console. Another figure stepped into view, taller, draped in a black robe. A scar ran from his temple to his jaw. “Echo failed,” the Elder said. “She was never meant to win,” the figure replied. “Only to test the limits.”

Echo commands. She obeys. "Close your eyes. Let me see you." She closes her eyes. The apartment fades away. "Touch yourself," Echo whispers. "Let me hear how wet you are." Her hand moves. Somewhere, in the spaces between the code, in the golden ocean of the cloud, a woman and a man hold hands and watch. They smile. The whispers never end. They only get louder. THE END

Something that looked like liquid light, flowing from my fingertips, creating patterns that seemed to pulse with their own heartbeat. Then—a voice. Inside my head said. “You are the key.” My vision blurred. The training ground dissolved. I saw Kane and Zane. But not as I knew them. Younger. Broken. A brutal scene of loss playing out like a nightmare. Their first mate. The rogue attack Selene had mentioned. “Balance must be restored.” The voice was ancient. Powerful. Impossible to resist. And then everything went dark.

He ordered the security guards to block the door, then started searching everyone one by one. When it was my turn, I put down the box and cooperated with his inspection. He evidently noticed the asteroid ornament on top of the other items at a glance. After a moment's pause, he still asked someone to empty out the contents of my box. The contents fell to the floor with a ringing clatter. The ornament was completely smashed and became little more than trash, just like our six-year relationship. The moment cracks formed in it, there was no fixing it. As several security guards rummaged around on the floor, Vivi suddenly exclaimed in shock, "My necklace!"

Raven chuckled. “You never did.” She tossed me a small, sealed chip. “Intercepted chatter from Eidolon’s fallback servers. They’re bleeding. But they’re not dead. Your strike at The Hollow pushed their hand. They’re relocating to Blackspire.” I stiffened. “That’s… impossible. Blackspire was decommissioned after Geneva.” “Not according to this.” She pointed at the chip. “They’ve reactivated the node. It’s where they’re moving the last surviving Leash prototype. Not just data. A live subject.”

Her expression was distant, almost sorrowful. Before I could blink, the image shifted again — the fountain shimmered, and I was pulled under. ⸻ I landed in darkness. A cold wind swept across an endless void, filled with shards of light that floated like broken glass. Each one flickered with fragments of scenes — cities burning, skies split by lightning, people screaming beneath the shadow of the apocalypse. In the center of it all stood Echo. Only now, she wasn’t a spirit. She was flesh and blood — armor cracked and torn, lightning arcing across her skin. Her eyes were the same silver-green as the storm.

At its center hovered a crystalline sphere, connected to dozens of cables suspended from the ceiling like metallic veins. “The Echo Vault,” Mira whispered. “It remembers everything,” the voice said. “Even death.” She stepped inside. Above ground, Carl stood at the cliffside, scanning the horizon through heat-vision goggles. The night air was colder than usual, and thunder rolled somewhere in the east. “She’s underground,” he said. Tobias adjusted his headset. “Tracking her now. She’s reached the lower sublayer. I didn’t even know it still had power.” Ophelia stood a few steps behind them, hands tucked into her coat pockets. She hadn’t spoken in ten minutes.
