Nolan’s POV It’s been four months since we arrived at the last pack, deep in the northern forests, far from other settlements. The world outside changed, but here we’re rebuilding. The last pack—once the last surviving group after the attacks and poisoned water—now rests under a council’s rule. Around the old wooden table, Emily squeezed my hand under it. I smiled. She clings to me lately, and I don’t mind. I don’t get her insecurity. The last pack is now led by a council: me, Emily, Hunter, Salem, Domus, Kaden, and Liam.

I ended up checking on the farm game. "Howdy!", The stupid mascot came up once more. "You can read the rules to know more.." It was almost asif the stupid thing had known what I'd been thinking. It took about fifteen minutes to read all the rules. Some of them were what Laura had explained for me... 1. Players must collect the allocated items within 24hours or stand a chance of losing theirs. 2. Players must not talk about the game with outsiders. 3. For every item found, the money reward increases!

I could put up with everything else, but that watch was different. It was a birthday gift from my late older brother, Norman, who had spent almost six months saving up for it. Two years ago, he was killed during an undercover mission. They never even found his remains. That watch was all I had left to remember him by. Samson was already so unfair. Meanwhile, I was exhausted, and I didn't even want to fight about this anymore. When I thought about my decision to leave soon, I felt strangely at peace.

Lucas stood with his head lowered, as if he couldn't even bring himself to meet my eyes. Slowly, he took a small box from inside his coat and held it out toward me. His voice was hoarse and barely above a whisper. "Wilma, I want to return this to you." I opened the box and saw the familiar star-shaped pendant. It was the same one I had broken and tossed aside in the car. It had been fully repaired. The delicate star glinted faintly under the light.

They were watching a Revolution. "We aren't just survivors," Kael said, passing the puck to Elara in a blur of heat. "We’re the Architects of the Aftermath." As Elara took the shot, the puck broke the sound barrier, its sonic boom shattering the glass of the warehouse's skylights. The light from the explosion illuminated the Rust, a signal to the entire world: The Game has just entered Overtime.

The rest of my pack pulls up in their cars. I exit the passenger side and look around me. I focus on the space between the trees for movement or sounds, but nothing can be seen or heard. I look back at my screen. The small triangle icon beeps over and over. "This doesn't make any sense," I say into the still air. "It says she's right here." Everybody has stepped out of their cars now and are looking around for any sign of the girls. My eyes move downward toward the ground, where the screen is incorrectly telling me the location of Rachel. As I'm about to look away a small gleam catches my eye. I squat and push the dirt away with the tips of my fingers and grab the object.

“You can’t start yet. Emma isn’t back.” Davies looked up from his clipboard, offering her an apologetic shrug. “I understand your concern, miss,” he replied calmly. “but the rules state that the game lasts for exactly forty minutes. After forty minutes, any person who is still out there on the trails is automatically disqualified from the scoring if they have not returned.” Olivia snapped instantly. “You think I care about this bullshit game? Get in there and find my best friend right now! You said this entire place was safe, so where the hell is Emma?”
