He sank to one knee, the arrow still in his shoulder, blood seeping down his arm.
I rushed to him, my hands shaking as I reached for the wound. “Don’t move,” I said, pressing against the arrow. “Gods, Gideon, it’s deep—”
“Rebecca.” His voice was low but steady, commanding even through the pain. “Don’t pull it out.”
“But—”
“It’s poisoned.”
The word hit like a blow. I checked the blood, smelled it, tried to sense its effect. My fingers hovered over my satchel, reaching for antidotes and salves. I tried a quick tincture, whispering the old words of counteraction… but nothing worked.
