POV: KAI The press box smells like musty coffee and old popcorn. I sit in the back row, laptop balanced on my knees, hoodie zipped to my chin. The collar still hides most of the mark, but I feel it every time I swallow. Like a reminder I can't delete. Game starts fast. Puck drops. The crowd roars. I type without looking down much—habit now. The Ice Hawks are up early, but it's not the score I'm watching.

Edward panicked and started apologizing, "I'm sorry, Nick. I didn't mean it. I'll pack my stuff and go back to the orphanage right now. Please don't be mad at me. I'm sorry." Juliana frowned and started scolding me, "Nick, your temper's seriously getting out of control. It was just a figurine. Do you really have to keep holding a grudge?" Mom looked at me as well. My legs wobble as I rise. My knees almost buckle, but I catch myself. And all the while, he’s just watching. Waiting.

It amazed me how someone as quiet and introverted as him could be so popular. At the moment, they were engrossed in a lively game of cards, shouting and making hand signals. Hayden's aunt, whom I recently learned was named Jada, approached me and handed me a bowl of what appeared to be soup. "It's Fish Broth," Zeek, who was standing next to me, informed. I nodded, peering into the bowl. "Look," Kai said, taking my spoon and stirring the contents. "It has yam, potatoes, macaroni, fish, ochroes, and eddoes." He explained, and I pursed my lips.

I take a sip of his coffee with a sigh. He swiftly takes it from me and hands me my mug of anti-murder juice. “You can’t have da alcohol, you. You're supposed to be underage.” “Being underage didn’t stop me back then,” I deadpan. Tee grins. “Me neither.” He pours some of the alcoholic Irish cream into my coffee cup. Jaxson’s company makes this peanut-butter Irish cream, and it’s called Kelpie. Which goes along with his peanut-butter whiskey called Pooka. Both the pooka and the kelpie are horse creatures from Irish folklore.
