Javier tried not to laugh. “Okay, fine. No pinch, no kiss, no kartoshka, no stealing candy.” He held up three fingers like he was being sworn in. “Just for today. Tomorrow, we renegotiate.”
“No,” Poppy cut in quickly. “Today and tomorrow. And… until I’m grown.”
“How old is ‘grown’?” I asked.
Poppy thought hard. “Twenty-three. Like Mommy when… when…” She glanced at me, remembering something she absolutely shouldn’t mention. “When Mommy had a stupid idea.”
