“Come here, you stupid girl.” Poppy whimpered but didn’t resist. She’d learned long ago that struggling only made things worse. Laura dragged her back up the stairs by her hair and flung her across the floor to Penelope’s feet. “Mother, I can’t feel my face,” Penelope cried, still holding the cheek Poppy had scratched. “It’s okay, darling. I’ll have Mr. Lu patch it up,” Laura said, brushing her daughter’s hair back. Poppy laid on the floor, her chest heaved, and she was trying to breathe. She focused on counting, slow and steady, like her doctor taught her.

When I couldn't pry her hands loose, I tried to gently wake her. "Sienna." She slowly opened her eyes. The moment she saw me, a brilliant light flashed across her eyes, dazzling and unmistakable. I didn't dare meet her gaze and quickly changed the subject. "Let go first. I'll get the bath ready and bring some fruit for you." Sienna tightened her grip instead. Her eyes were glossy, and her voice slightly hoarse. "Is this how you used to take care of Mia?"

He kept mumbling in disbelief, "That's impossible! Patricia locked you in my room with me. You must have slept with me!" I took out a few sleeping pills from my pocket and lifted them in the air for everyone to see while I announced out loud, "It was just in your dreams! I added sleeping pills to the drinks I poured for you and Titus that night. Nothing happened between us!" The look on Titus' face changed, and he glared angrily at my mother. My mother cowered in panic when she saw the look Titus threw at her. She did not dare to look into his eyes.

I wondered how much longer I'd be able to keep the secret from Bapi. "You were saying something about poppies?" I probed, finishing off the tea and placing the cup on the ground. "Oh, yes. So, I went on a walk, last night, and I found a few poppy flowers in the poppy fields out at the edge of the town," he said, the usual playfulness in him mitigated. "You're drunk, aren't you?" He shook his head, chuckling. "No, you don't understand! I saw opium poppies."
