Unexpected Divorce
The waiter nodded and disappeared.
The silence stretched charged, watchful.
“So,” he said the moment we were alone, his voice lower now. “Tell me about yourself. Married or have a boyfriend.”
I gave a small, guarded smile. “By now, you should already know a lot about me. What are you waiting for?”
“Yes,” he replied evenly, “but I want to hear from you.”
I exhaled slowly. The truth pressed against my ribs, heavier than I expected.
“I was married,” I said. “Recently divorced.” My fingers tightened around the edge of the table. “My husband cheated. He was my first… in everything.”
