My spoon slips from my hand and clatters to the floor, peanut butter and pickle carnage splattering the tile. I don’t even blink. I just stare at my phone like my brain has been unplugged. “Shit, Mel — what’s going on? Are you okay?” Kiara’s voice sounds far away, like she’s underwater.

I frown and immediately reply. Me: What’s on saturday? Evelyn: you’re joking, right? :O A second later, she sends a GIF of a guy clutching his chest in fake horroI snort, biting back a laugh as I stare at the screen. Me: Uhm… no? Am I missing something? Evelyn: oh my god.

I confirmed. We both went quiet. Because we both knew what “selfie” meant now. Not just a picture. A potential thread. And the internet loved threads. Jace exhaled slowly. “Micah and Rory should be nearby.” Like on cue, my phone buzzed in my pocket, still on, because I wasn’t on shift. A text from an unknown number that I now recognized instantly as Micah’s style of communication: Corner of Pine + 4th. Now. I showed Jace.

The silence and tranquility was broken when his phone dinged loudly, indicating that a message had just entered. Gadreel cracked open his eyes and reached for his phone. He swiped his thumb across the screen and typed in his password. A single message from Mickey was on the notification tab. Gadreel opened the message, a frown forming on his face. It was picture of Ivory smiling at a man. They were on a race track venue, judging from the background, but Gadreel didn’t pay any attention to those small details, the man included, as he could only see his back.

I sync my phone to the mini picture printer I stuffed in here and start printing out the pictures while I put the clothes I got away. This room is ridiculously big. I feed my fish and wait for the rest of the pictures to finish printing. When it;s just one of them, I don't really feel their energy but as the two of them come up here together, my skin prickles. The door slams shut behind me and it's just the three of us and Nimbus. "We need to talk," Micca growls. "Sure," I nod. The fact that I'm being completely passive upsets him. I don't know how not to be without completely losing it. There is no in-between setting.

Finn isn’t fazed by the scrutiny, and I’m not surprised given his job as a cop. “Oh, I have all the goods, a few incriminating photos too and am very willing to share.” Finn laughs, pulling his phone from his back pocket and bringing up a bunch of embarrassing photos of me. The first one is from when we went to have a picnic at the park and got rained on. When we were running to the car with all our stuff I tripped and ended up face first in a mud puddle. The photo is of me standing there, face and body so covered in mud all you can see are my eyes. “Oh dear, you poor thing.” GeGe laughs as she looks at the phone, giggling away. “I would love a copy of that one please.”
