Elena hadn’t noticed him yet. He watched her move through the transformed space, her fingers grazing the books with reverent caution, as though one misstep could shatter the magic.

But Elara tasted the poison beneath every smile. She swept into the hall beside her parents, Kael just behind, her gown of deep green catching the candlelight. At the center of the room stood a pedestal holding several shattered pieces of what appeared to be the same relic as the shard. “Elena,” Seraphina said cautiously. “You need to stay back.” But Elena was already stepping forward, her body moving as if drawn by an unseen force. “Elena, stop!” Lucas grabbed her arm, but the moment she touched the pedestal, a surge of energy shot through the room.

From the rift stepped a figure I hadn't seen since the Frozen Sea. It was Selene. But she wasn't the salt-ghost of the tundra. She was solid, her skin the color of a winter sky, her hair a river of frozen stars. She held a new weapon—a scepter made of black bone and sapphire ice. "Selene," I whispered, the crimson light in my eyes reaching a fever pitch. "Hello, Elara," Selene said, her voice sounding like a thousand glass bells shattering. She looked at the Council, then at Thorne, then at me. "The High Queen sends her regards. She found the Moot... a little too civil for her tastes."

Elena's POV "Princess." The Queen's smile was still in place. The eye behind it had gotten somewhere it had not been a minute ago. "You are a very sensible girl." "Thank you, Your Majesty." "Very." "Thank you." "Adrian, darling. We will not need the steps." "No." "A quiet notice will do. The Luna Princess of the South. An old name. A small pack. A private ceremony. Yes?" "Yes." "Wonderful. Then we eat."

I had no patience. “I am Krysta Bronzetail, matron of the house.” She didn’t shudder once. “And who might you be?
